Regulation for TV content needed to ensure better portrayal of women: Mukesh Sharma, DD west zone

There is a need for proper regulations or guidelines for television content said Mukesh Kumar, the west zone Doordarshan chief in Mumbai on Monday.

Kumar and others including Rakesh Kumar, CEO censor board, Mamta Sharma chairperson of national commission for women, Susiben Shah, chief of the state women's commission, actor Juhi Chawla and Satvasheela Chavan, wife of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, an educationist in her own right spoke at the opening session of a national consultation on 'portrayal of women in the media'.

The meet was organized by the NCW and its member Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar played a key role. The CM was meant to be the chief guest but he had to head elsewhere. He, however, made time to interact informally with women members of eight state commissions and activists during a break. His wife speaking straight from the heart said women, young and old, 'need to know their rights and stand up to their beliefs'. She did not think Mumbai was unsafe and said ''crime reporting was coming to the fore' thanks to 'alert media'. She however also said media has to be more responsible, as was the theme of every speaker.
