Air Waves belongs to you.

Air waves which belongs to public property can not be by exploited by private broadcasters for profit only. Now most of our electronic media exist only to generate profit  .   Writes Joseph Martin CJ

You believe it or not Air Waves belongs to you. The air waves are the transmission  frequencies used by the radio, Television  broadcasters and mobile phone operators to transmit the signals. There is a historical judgment by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. that air waves constitute public property and cant be monopolized. In the historic judgment by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in 1995  (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting V/S Cricket Association of west Bengal writ petition ) ruled that air waves constitute public property which must be utilised for advancing public good, Since air waves constitute public property, mobile phone operators  and private FM operators pay nominal license fees to the government in its capacity as the custodian of public properties. Private television broadcasters  use  these air waves free of coast. In return for this private broadcasters are supposed to serve the public interests. Air waves which belongs to public property can not be by exploited by private broadcasters for profit only.

Broadcasting has now become  an  industry and day by day new entrants are coming to the field with the single motive of profit,  by reaping the benefits of consumerist culture, spread by the media ,encouraged by the media and exploited by the media , after the globalisation and liberalisation of Indian economy.

Ideally or media should provide quality entertainment and useful information that fosters  a healthy democracy. But what is the situation in  our country  now? Broadcasting has now become  an industry and day by day new entrants are coming to the field with the single motive of profit,  by reaping the benefits of consumerist culture, spread by the media ,encouraged by the media and exploited by the media , after the globalisation and liberalisation of Indian economy.

Now most of our electronic media exist only to generate profit . It is a well accepted truth that  crime shows, sex shows and similar shows had many more viewers than other shows on news channels. Advertisers went by the number of viewers when advertising on channels. Recently editorial director of a leading news channel declared that

"If I have to choose between the market and my conscience, I
shall choose the market" .

That is the  greed and the  dependence of private electronic media on advertisers now!

What's wrong with  electronic media?

People from all backgrounds and political beliefs are concerned about the state of our electronic media system. Many citizens complain that news media have drifted toward "infotainment" .We should see the move by the I&b ministry to introduce content code for broadcasters in this context. But unfortunately broadcasters not even replied to the content code as desired by the ministry.

Whatever the complaint, however, one thing is for certain: There are underlying structural issues at work that give rise to these problems. Attacking a single symptom — such as indecent programming — does not cure the disease. We must look deeper at the root causes — and solve them.
