DD to deploy robotic cameras for R-Day

Live coverage of the country's 61st Republic Day celebrations has gone high-tech, with Doordarshan deploying advanced robotic cameras. “There will be 18 manned cameras covering the Republic Day parade. There will also be multiple robotic cameras deployed in the President’s box to provide unhindered coverage,” said a senior DD official involved in the production of the parade coverage.

Tuesday will be the second occasion when robotic cameras will be used to cover the Republic Day parade, even though they have been a part of the broadcaster’s technical infrastructure for a decade now, DD insiders say. “We have upgraded the robotic cameras to give high-quality visuals of the President’s box where South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will be chief guest,” said a DD official.

Considered the biggest annual television production event undertaken by DD, the 130-minute live telecast from Rajpath in the Capital will be seen by at least 300 million viewers in more than 140 countries, say DD officials. The broadcaster’s team comprises 125 technicians, cameramen, engineers and others.

The combined reach (adding the reach of all cable channels) for such special television events. Once you combine that, along with the international feed, the Republic Day coverage should reach over 300-million viewers globally,” said a senior DD official.

The 61st Republic Day events will also be available in cyberspace for the third year, courtesy the National Informatics Centre. A live Webcast of the entire event will available on republicday.nic.in, while the audio coverage will be available on All India Radio.
