All India Radio Rajkot   to upgrade its transmission to digital

There is good news for the listeners of All India Radio (AIR) in the Rajkot region and beyond. The official broadcast medium is going to install 100 kilowatt Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) capable medium wave transmitter at its Rajkot centre. This will ensure CD quality listening on digital radio sets, said Mr.Rajesh Jain, the superintending engineer at AIR Rajkot.

Mr.Jain said that currently the stereo quality transmission was available only on FM stations but the new transmitter would enable this on medium wave also.  He said the special digital radio set price was currently high (around Rs 15,000 per set) but once DRM capable MW transmitters replace the existing MW transmitters at places like Ahmedabad and Vadodara, the price would come down. The transmitter for Rajkot centre is one of the two for which the AIR has placed orders; the other will be installed at Chinsurah in West Bengal, he said. These solid state transmitters will replace old analogue transmitters of the same capacity at these centres.
