Doordarshan heads to Rs 1,000-crore revenue

Public broadcaster Doordarshan is only a whisker away from the Rs 1,000 crore-revenue mark, besides being close to the break-even point. Aided by rising ad revenues and income from allied services, DD posted a 20% jump in its 2009-10 revenue to Rs 983 crore.

Coupled with the earnings of All India Radio (AIR),  Prasar Bharati’s overall revenue in 2009-10 may cross Rs 1,250 crore. The biggest standalone programming property for Doordarshan continues to be its show for farmers, Krishi Darshan. According to senior DD officials, Krishi Darshan is now a Rs 100-crore brand and a golden goose that fetches broadcaster Rs 100 crore in revenue every year.

Doordarshan commands the biggest reach among television channels in the country, boasting of around 450 million viewers. Of the Rs 983 crore, the share of revenue generated from government ads stood at around 25%, among the highest compared with the private channels.

According to Aruna Sharma, director general, Doordarshan, “The growth is mainly led by a jump in the advertising revenue. Doordarshan is a shade short of achieving operational break-even and that is our target for the current fiscal”.

On a net basis, DD generated revenues of Rs 951 crore in 2009-10. However, from the last fiscal, Sharma is aggregating all revenue sources that were not being taken into consideration till now. “Adding all these together, Doordarshan has generated an overall revenue of Rs 983 crore in the last fiscal,” Sharma said.

These activities include revenue generated by its free-to-air DTH venture ‘DD Direct Plus’, processing fees for various activities and income from OB Vans. DD had stagnant revenues in the previous years while its operational cost increased. For 2006-07 and 2007-08, DD generated revenues of Rs 726 crore and Rs 724 crore, respectively.

But DD’s operational costs shot up in 2008-09, and crossed the Rs 1,000-crore mark owing to higher dearness allowances and the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.
