In a written reply to the question of S. Ambalagan, Minister for state of Information and Broadcasting Dr. S. Jagatrakshakan in Rajya Sabha said that in terms of viewership Doordarshan and Akashvani are no less than private TV and Radio channels.

       The government has completely denied that in comparison of private TV and Radio operators, Doordarshan and Akashvani holds lesser number of viewers and audience. The minister said that according to the TAM report, the TRP of these two public broadcasters stands at number one position for three consecutive years i.e. 2007, 2008 and 2009. The same was reported by Prasar Bharati to the government.

        Akashvani has also reported that according to the data of its listener ship survey, the number of its audience is increasing constantly form past few years.

      In his reply to the question of N.R Govindrajan, Jagatrakshakan said that under the 11th five year plan, plans are to increase the capacity of DTH platform of Doordarshan from present 59 to 97. However, this plans has not been granted permission till yet.
