Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer (CEO) B S Lalli today (28-06-10) said the public broadcaster is given importance to educate the masses through its locally-relevant programmes. Participating in a meet-the press organised by the Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation (APWJF), he said Prasar Bharati had taken steps to revamp the channel system to provide news and events quickly with accuracy.
It had recently appointed a number of part-time correspondents for both All India Radio and Doordarshan and was providing cameras to them to work for both AIR and Doordarshan with live programmes and news events from all over the country, he added.
He said in pluralistic society, a national broadcaster like Prasar Bharati had a great responsibility in nurturing a treasure trove of constant creation. Stating that there was no competition between the Prasar Bharati and commercial broadcasters, he said the national broadcaster was born out of public interest and its services whereas the commercial channels' idea was different.
While underlining the need to produce more creative and local talent programmes, Mr Lalli said there should be a balance between the in-house production programmes and outsourcing programmes with a social message to the masses. ''India has a rich treasure trove diversity and we should exploit it to create local talent programmes. There is lot of scope for creative content in AIR and Doordarshan,'' he said.
Asked why the viewers were not watching Doordarshan programmes on metros , he said due to lack of non-implementation of the Cable Regulatory Act, the Doordarshan programmes were getting lesser viewership. As per the law, private channels had to show the Doordarshan channel in the first 12 prime channels. But these channels were not doing so, he pointed out.
He said he had suggested to the Union Government to authorise the officers of the Doordarshan as Inspector to monitor private channels on the implementation of the Act and report to the Government to stick to the mandatory norms of the Act.
