Doordarshan is to commence telecast of a new series, 'Rabindranath
Tagore's Poem' from 15 July as a tribute to the Nobel Laureate to mark his
150th birth anniversary.
The series is slated to be telecast every
Monday at 10 pm on DD National. Titled 'Thrayadashee', is a compilation of
13 short films based on 13 poems of Tagore. Each film narrates a different
theme and mood like solitude, singularity, border, religion, love,
relationship, betrayal, hope etc with subtlety and in profound cinematic
language.
Thrayadashee is not a periodical but has a
universality of time and space. The 13 films are each of 25-30 minutes
duration and has been named Bansi (The Flute), Krishnakali (The Dark
Maiden), Mukti (The Freedom), Phanki (Deception), Pukur Dhare (From the
pool side), Ek Gaye (A Village), Camellia (Camellia), Banshiwallah (The
Flutist), Shesh Chithi (The Last Letter), Hothat Dekha (The Unexpected
Meeting), Patralekha (The letter ought to be written), Basha Bari (The
mansion) and Istition (The Station).
Directed on his own screenplay by Buddhadeb
Dasgupta, the series has been filmed by Diego Romero with art direction by
Subrata Chakraborty. Music is by Aloknanda Dasgupta. The series has been
produced by the National Film Development Corporation.
Dasgupta told indiantelevision.com in a telephonic interview from Kolkata
that he had attempted to put the essence of Tagore's thoughts in his poems
in the series. "These films encapsulate Tagore's humanism and showcase the
creativity that he had in him and a genius that he was," he says.
The National Implementation Committee for the commemoration of Tagore's
150th birth anniversary (Ministry of Culture) got these films made by the
NFDC.
Doordarshan, which had earlier telecast the serial 'Gora' based on the
second novel of the Nobel laureate, is now slated to telecast this series
based on the poems on its National Network. The screening committee headed
by filmmaker Shyam Benegal had been constituted by the National
Implementation Committee to examine film production and related proposals
for the commemoration.
These films reflect a wide range of his intellectual
thinking and are as much as relevant today as they were when conceived and
written by Gurudev, a Radical man of Indian Renaissance of his time.
'Gora', a 26-episode series, had been produced by
renowned filmmaker, curator, distributor, exhibitor and producer Gargi Sen,
and directed by Somnath Sen who is known for his work in cinema.
