DD,AIR to roll out apps for smartphones,tablets

                    The public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, which is also the oldest broadcaster in India, is making a venture into digital technology. Prasar Bharati is considering introducing mobile applications for Doordarshan and All India Radio that will provide latest news and entertainment dosage including access to exceptional archival stuff to viewers on mobiles, laptops and tablets.

The public broadcaster is also planning to sell surplus land as part of its efforts towards financial restructuring.

Both DD and AIR are already on Youtube and Twitter with a growing followers. While DD News has 32,000 followers on Twitter, it receives heartening 700 views per day on Youtube. There are about 1,700 videos uploaded at present. AIR also has 24,000 followers on Twitter. The next step according to an official is to create and develop mobile apps.

"The apps for news service will be a priority. Prasar Bharati has an unenviable credible network through the length and breadth of the country that will be put to use. It has the potential of creating its own forte amid the private news broadcasters," a source said.

The archival material that will be digitized and uploaded could be subscription based. The organization hopes to earn ad revenue of Rs 200 crore with finally digital media earning 25-30 % of its revenue. The apps are likely to be operational in the next six months.
