Doordarshan's 60% content is entertainment 

             According to the annual report of Prasar Bharati for 2007-08, Public Broadcaster   Doordarshan has 60 per cent of its entire programming dedicated towards entertainment and film or film-based shows.Sports takes away 10 per cent of the programming time while news and current affairs contribute to a mere 8 per cent on DD National.

        With the coverage of Lok Sabha going to Lok Sabha Television, Parliament coverage was a mere two per cent.

       Despite the avowed importance being given to ecology particularly in view of global warming, programmes on environment comprised five per cent, the same as children’s content.

          Educational programmes comprised only eight per cent of the entire programming of DD National. Other categories took the balance two per cent of the telecast time of this 24x7 channel. Seventy per cent of the programmes were either inhouse or produced under the self-financing scheme, while ten per cent each were sponsored or acquired, and five per cent each were from government agencies or other sources.

 

         DD One today has the largest reach among all the 516 channels (including 483 private and two Parliamentary channels) available to Indian viewers. However, DD has still terrestrially failed to reach eight per cent of the population and 19 per cent of the area in the country even after 50 years. The terrestrial reach of DD One is to 92 per cent of the population and 81 per cent of the area.

             DD News, which broadcasts 89 per cent news and 11 per cent current affairs, reaches out to a meagre 49.1 per cent of the population and 25.6 per cent of the area, according to the annual report of Prasar Bharati for 2007-08.

          DD Mobile TV, launched in May 2007 with eight channels on DVB-H standard, is expected to go up to 16 shortly. India remains one of the few countries in the world to have mobile TV for hand-held instruments/mobile phones.
