Flood victims bank on radios
For them, it's the last link to the outside world. Virtually pushed into
the Dark Age without power, flood victims across North Karnataka have
begun to treasure their transistor radios.
"We had long forgotten the utility value of radio sets after TV invaded our lives. But the unprecedented disaster has brought the radio back to focus,'' said villagers taking shelter on the Krishna river embankment in Bagalkot taluk. Several people in flood-hit districts of Bijapur, Bagalkot and Raichur use the radio to keep themselves aware of the latest announcements on possible rain, release of dam water from Maharashtra and relief and rehabilitation programmes of the state government. With local AIR's station releasing its hourly bulletin on the flood situation, these radios are handy for the affected people.
