Contrary to the general perception, public broadcaster Doordarshan,
earns a sizeable revenue, and targets Rs 1000-crore business in the
current fiscal, according to Doordarshan Director General Aruna
Sharma.
Doordarshan had by October this year earned Rs 423
crore, up from Rs
380 crore for the same period the previous year.Talking to newspersons
, Ms Sharma said in the last
(financial) year, 2008-2009, Doordarshan earned between Rs 700-800
crore and has targetted Rs 950 crores in the current fiscal. ''We
may touch Rs 1000 crore by the end of the financial year.
Of the 33 channels the Doordarshan operates as public broadcaster,
DD National and DD news gets over 70 per cent as revenue. Doordarshan has also finalised a new scheme allowing from January
next year its regional channel in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam to
produce serials at Rs 75,000 each episode, unlike Rs 25,000 each
earlier, and to dub them in other two languages in a bid to improve
their revenue and quality of production.
Doordarshan with also move the District Magistrates to see the
Master Operators comply with the mandatory telecast of the bonquet
of Doordarshan channels, many of which the private cable operators
were ignoring or feeding with poor quality signals, she added.
