DD Guwahati Kendra marks golden jubilee of National Broadcaster.

          In the series of programmes to mark the golden jubilee of  National Broadcaster  Doordarshan , a special, colourful programme, produced by the Guwahati Kendra, will be telecast on 20 December.The programme will be telecast from 9.30 pm on the national channel, DD1.  

              It comprises a folk cultural concert Sonali Sandhya, organised before an invited audience; and Golden Odyssey: a Western  music programme by music groups from Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam.
Established on 15 September 1959, Doordarshan had commenced with hour-long daily educational school telecasts, but regular two-hour telecasts commenced in 1965 when Indira Gandhi was the Information and Broadcasting Minister. Doordarshan gradually increased its timing. It entered the color and the multi-channel era with the ninth Asian Games in 1982. 

           Interestingly, the various general entertainment channels that commenced in the early nineties initially depended on serials that had been telecast on Doordarshan. Some mythologicals made for Doordarshan are even now being telecast by other channels.  

          With the help of DTH and satellite TV, Doordarshan is reaching the entire country and has now grown to become the world’s largest terrestrial television network. It will adapt to High Definition Television (HDTV) to coincide with the Commonwealth Games next year. Doordarshan is being seen in 3500 million households in the country.

      The programmes are being held in different Kendras. There will also be a concert in Delhi. In addition, there will be several discussions looking back at the growth of Doordarshan, and the final one on 15 September 2010 will examine sports evens, in view of the Commonwealth Games.
